Equine Refuge, Barcelona Spain

I was giving a workshop in  Barcelona, Spain. On the Saturday I woke up with a very vivid dream: I dreamed I was selling books and artifacts to save horses. In my dream I saw the pitiful condition of those horses. The next day I told my dream to Kiko, a student of mine, who soon became a close friend and who works for three animal refuges in the area of Barcelona. He told me: "On Monday, I'll take you to a horse refuge and you'll meet a saint."

Well we went. I cannot describe the conditions of the horses I saw there because they are so horrible and the photos speak for themselves. The cruelty towards animals in Spain has no name.

What I want to talk about is the dedication of this extraordinary woman, Eleonor, who works ALONE in the refuge to save and heal all these animals. Eleonor is extremely radiant and positive even though she deals with suffering all day. I was moved to tears when I met her and was truly inspired by her greatness. Her husband, now retired, keeps his job just to maintain this refuge. So he is a saint too!

Anyhow, the Spaniards do not give donations; therefore Eleonor and her husband manage ONLY on his income. They have been able to save many lives and adopt many horses. In the refuge, there are many dogs as well. I'll spare you the details of the cruelty done to abused dogs, especially hunting dogs and galgos. There are also cats, goats, ducks, pigs and even a cow! What struck me the most was that the hunting dogs never touch the cats or ducks; they all seem to cohabit very well. Some are blind, some cannot even walk. One can clearly see the suffering in their eyes, but all seem happy to be there and all adore Eleonor! The cow followed us around like a dog during the whole visit and wanted petting and cuddles. She did not seem to realize she was so large and heavy. When we left she mooed in disagreement!

Eleonor needs people to help her and more land for her refuge. I decided there and then I would  do all I could to help. There is a link for donations and part of the proceeds from every workshop will be going to the horse refuge.
